In this post, we’ll explore some of the reasons why tea has captured our hearts, starting with green tea, one of the healthiest beverages on the planet.
As you may know, tea comes from the leaves of a plant (Camellia sinensis). Depending on how the leaves are processed—through oxidation, fermentation, and curing—we get different types of tea: Green, Black, White, Oolong, Pu-erh, and more.
Green Tea: Ancient and Popular
Green tea is one of the oldest and most popular types of tea. It does not undergo full oxidation, so it retains its characteristic green color and preserves its natural compounds, giving it a range of health benefits:
Powerful antioxidant: Green tea contains about 30% polyphenols by weight, particularly catechins, which are natural antioxidants that help prevent cellular damage by reducing free radical formation. This protects our cells and may help slow premature aging.
Boosts brain function: With moderate amounts of caffeine, green tea can enhance concentration and alertness. Combined with L-theanine, which has relaxing effects, it provides a perfect balance between focus and calm.
Cardiovascular health: Regular consumption helps reduce LDL cholesterol levels and improve circulation, protecting heart health.
Regulates blood sugar: Drinking green tea has been associated with improved insulin sensitivity, which may help control blood sugar levels.
Taste and Quality
Green tea is one of the most consumed and versatile teas worldwide, mainly grown in Asia, with China and Japan being the most highly regarded producers.
At Kombucha Republik, we use China Sencha Organic green tea, known for its smooth, sweet, aromatic, and delicate flavor. The ideal brewing temperature is between 75°C and 80°C for a few minutes, which brings out fresh, herbal aromas and reduces astringency. The result is a beautiful medium olive-green infusion.
In upcoming posts, we’ll explore other types of tea and their unique characteristics—stay tuned!
