We already knew that kombucha is a healthy beverage—you only need to drink this fermentation marvel for a few weeks to start feeling better—but there is now increasing scientific evidence supporting it.
A recent publication in the prestigious scientific journal The Journal of Nutrition highlights the benefits of kombucha for digestive health.
Specifically, the study titled “Regular Consumption of Black Tea Kombucha Modulates the Gut Microbiota in Individuals with and without Obesity” examined people with and without overweight, who consumed black tea kombucha regularly for 8 weeks without changing their diet or daily routine.
Researchers identified a total of 145 phenolic compounds in the kombucha, mainly flavonoids (81%) and phenolic acids (19%). This composition promotes the growth of bacterial populations such as Bacteroidota and Akkermanciaceae in the gut of those who consume it.
The researchers concluded:"Regular consumption of kombucha positively influenced gut microbiota in both normal-weight and obese groups, with more pronounced effects in the obese group, suggesting it may be particularly beneficial for these individuals."
In summary, the benefits of kombucha’s phenolic compounds include:
Anti-inflammatory action: helps reduce intestinal inflammation.
Antioxidant action: protects digestive tract cells from oxidative damage, strengthening the intestinal barrier and improving its function.
Modulation of the gut environment: phenolic compounds can influence the microbial balance in the gut, promoting a healthier environment.
Improved digestion: stimulate digestive enzyme secretion and help regulate intestinal transit.
